No frills was a photocopied ‘zine that ran from 1998-2003 over 10 sporadic issues. The zine was a collection of random findings, blatant appropriation and collages. There was no theme except for a broad (and probably stolen) fist in the air against the hipocracy and tendancy to conform. The way in which the art, images and articles were composed, contextualised and contrasted was the main medium for the message of revolt to be communicated. Some of the inclusions were beauty and truth merely stumbled across, and left “as-is” in their raw unadulterated glory. Others had been subtly altered to express some thought or to expose some inconsistancy or humourous possibility. Most hillarious was an nearly random “Letters-to-the-Editor” mockery which were a jumble of quotes from the personal correspondance of 7U? with his friends and cronies. www.667u.com No Frills was a do-it-yourself guide to mayhem and mischief making, a humerus look at social issues and information on electronic/noise happenings, promoting local gigs and releases. The final issue came with a CD from people who had supported the zine. A one off Video zine was also produced. This is that video. Plant ID: Japanese Pine (Pinus thunbergii) Genus: Pinus : thunbergii Family: PINACEAE Common name: Japanese Black Pine, Kuromatsu Plant type: Evergreen coniferous Origin: Coastal areas of Japan and South Korea Habit/Form: A straggly twisty-like broad pine, can be bushy as well as contorted, usually irregular canopy but can still maintain some form of the usual pyramidal pine shape. Can have a nice spread of radiating branches allowing many options for pruning and shape training, lots of hanging and movement in branches, very charismatic for a pine tree, strikes unique poses. Perfectly comfortable growing-out or refined and elegant. Many thunbergii that are maintained and cared for may not appear so straggly. Local growth in neighbourhoods, city, domestic, etc, will average 6-24m, expect to see it around 9-12m or a small to , but can reach 40m in natural habitat. Young thunbergii can have thin grey trunks and branches, maturing into a dark furrow, grey-brown, ashy grey or darker(black), plated and scaly, also dark grey with , excellent size thickness. Its irregular furrowed plates can be quite striking. A tough tree that tolerates pollution and less than ideal conditions (although it does stress and seems to have quite a few attacking feeders and borers, insects, etc), tolerates salt and grows on coasts, roots handle salt, tolerates drought and various soils. A well loved tree for the art of bonsai. Can be long lived. Leaves: Dark green, rich

Is there a traditional anniversary gift in japanese culture?

Question by : Is there a traditional anniversary in ?
My friend is having distress finding for her japanese in law (I am half japanese, so she so wrongly assumes that I’m the expert!). I told her that there is no need for her to give a gift for someone else’s anniversary unless it’s an anniversary party, but she insists. I suggested a restaurant gift certificate for the couple, but that’s not cutting it. Her in law had her baby the before Boy’s , so my suggestion for that gift was a kite, which was a huge hit. Now she wants another japanese gift thought. There are some japanese nurseries nearby, so I suggested a . We’ve also thought about an or a watercolor koi painting, but to me these seem more like housewarming gifts. Any suggestions for something more suitable?

Answer by Tom
There is no tranditional gift for . As a matter of fact, they don’t celebrate the unless it’s 25 years (silver) or 50 years (gold.) Basically if she follows the western way, that would be fine. As you can see, 25/50 years are the same. I reckon whatever her sister-in-law has intereseted in would be nice but am sure she’d appreciate any thoughtful gift.

Mike discusses the two ways to water, which are dunking and pouring. The method you use depends more upon the soil you have than anything else. It’s all about keeping the air in the soil because plants air around their roots just as much as they water. Mike also discusses the right reason for using moss on your bonsai. Sure it’s decorative, but there is a functional purpose as well.
